When questioned about the wallet, Cohen advised that the wallet belonged to his brother-in-law. Arresting officers discovered that Cohen was lying to them after contacting the victim's wife who was worried because her husband had not returned home from his work. Arresting officers then put out an APB on the victim and his Volkswagen. The body of the victim was discovered the next morning at about 5 A.M., by a security guard in the parking lot of a business out in the county.

The cause of death was determined to be stab wounds that penetrated the heart and the lung. The victim's Volkswagen was found on the 28th of July 1979 in a wrecker service parking lot. A key found on Cohen fit the ignition to Dixon's Volkswagen.
