(A summary of decisions made by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners)

APPOINTMENTS:
The Board made the following appointments:

  • Carol Barry and Linda Olige were reappointed to the Adult Care Home Advisory Committee
  • Christy Bryant was reappointed to the Information Services and Technology Committee
  • Jane Childrey and John McLeod were appointed to the Personnel Commission
  • Corine Thomas was reappointed to the Waste Management Advisory Board

NAMING OF THE FREEDOM CENTER:
The Board approved the renaming of the building on Freedom Drive - formerly the Freedom Mall - the Valerie C. Woodard Building in honor of former Commissioner Valerie Woodard who passed away last year.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE:
The Board received the 2008 Award for Excellence from the Balanced Scorecard Institute in recognition of Mecklenburg County's performance management system - Managing for Results (M4R) - using the balanced scorecard.

In 2001, County Manager Harry Jones introduced M4R as a means of achieving long-term goals established by the Board. As part of M4R, the Board adopted a Community & Corporate Scorecard using the balanced scorecard system to establish specific goals, strategies and performance measures. The most recent scorecard results are published in the 2008 Performance Report.

REAPPRAISAL UPDATE:
The Board voted to revalue real property in 2011. The Board recently decided not to reappraise tax values in 2009 as was previously planned. The County is required by State law to complete the revaluation by 2011.

CHARITABLE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN:
The Board instructed the County Manager to study the issue of employee fundraising campaigns. Manager Harry Jones said he would come back to the Board within 120 days with additional comments from key stakeholders, including the United Way, Arts and Science Council and County employees.

COMMITTEE OF 21 UPDATE:
The Board received an update from the Committee of 21, a volunteer transportation task force of the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the Charlotte Chamber. The Committee convened in May 2008 to prioritize Mecklenburg's road needs and to identify long-term funding options to address these needs.
