(A summary of decisions made by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners:)


PROCLAMATIONS AND RECOGNITIONS:
The Board adopted the following recognitions and proclamation:

  • Acknowledged the Mecklenburg Transportation System (a program of the Department of Social Services) which was recently honored by the North Carolina Public Transportation Association as their Safety Recipient for 2006.
  • Proclaimed August 25 as Women’s Equality Day.
  • Adopted a proclamation from the North Carolina Health & Wellness Trust Fund and Blue Cross/Blue Shield which names Mecklenburg County a "Fit Community."
  • Recognized nine Park and Recreation programs as recipients of Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo).
  • Recognized Dannette Smith for her outstanding contributions to child welfare practices in Mecklenburg County.
PUBLIC APPEARANCES:
The following people addressed the board about issues of interest:
  • Blanche Penn and Tim Clark spoke about the Key Father’s Initiative and the Million Fathers March
  • Raphael Basisa spoke about the World’s Fair in Charlotte in 2020
  •  Eric Davis spoke about a special program on WTVI about the US National Whitewater Center
  • Richard Lincoln spoke about emergency housing for the homeless
  • John James spoke about the County Jail recidivism rate

APPOINTMENTS:
The Board made the following appointments:

  • Jon Morris was appointed to the Building Development Commission
  • Aric Beals and James Diana were appointed to the Citizen’s Capital Budget Advisory Committee
  • Barbara Benningfield, Evelyn Hochstat, Joan Kirk and Nancy Litaker were re-appointed to the Adult Care Home Advisory Committee
  • Todd Glasier, Kimberly Holley and Gordon Miller were re-appointed to the Air Quality Commission
  • Judy Smith and Nikki Stamps were re-appointed to the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee
  • Walter Bauer was re-appointed to the Waste Management Advisory Board
  • Arthur Oudmayer was appointed to the Public Art Commission

ADELPHIA CABLE:
The Board exercised its right to purchase portions of the bankrupt Adelphia Cable system and immediately transferred ownership to the towns of Davidson and Mooresville. The towns will operate the cable system for customers their jurisdictions and sphere of influence as well as within the town of Cornelius.

BOND REFERENDUM:
The Board approved a resolution setting September 5 as the date for a public hearing on three bond referenda on track to be place on the November 6 ballot. The three bond issues include:

  • $516 Million for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for construction, renovation and land purchase
  • $30 Million for Central Piedmont Community College for construction, renovation and land purchase
  • $35,600,000 for land bonds to purchase property for open space, watershed protection, community college and public school purposes
The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners met in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. The meeting was televised live on The Government Channel, cable channel 16 and rebroadcast on WTVI at Midnight. The meeting is scheduled for re-telecast at various times on the Government Channel and GOV-TV, digital cable channel 232. Meetings are also available for viewing online
