(A summary of decisions made by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners:)
AWARDS AND PROCLAMATIONS. The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed January 4 as Jack Orr Boyte Day in Mecklenburg County for his contributions to historic preservation and January 16 as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
APPOINTMENTS. The Board made the following appointments:
- Barbara Edwards and Tanya Monroe to the Adult Care Home Advisory Committee
- Robin Branstrom and Curl Gregory to the Library Board of Trustees
- Gene Rogers to the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee
- Nina Lipton to the Planning Commission
- Lawrence Seitlin to the Public Broadcasting Authority
- Clarissy Knox, Marilyn O'Connor and Hazel West to the Region F Aging Advisory Committee
LAND ACQUISITIONS. The Board approved the following land acquisitions:
- The donation of nine acres on McDowell Creek from Greens at Birkdale Village Property Owners Association for greenway purposes.
- The purchase of approximately 10.24 acres on Beatties Ford Road for $187,392 from Evelyn M. Reid for open space preservation and watershed protection.
- The purchase of 0.172 acres at 1619 Catherine Simmons Avenue for $12,500 to become part of a neighborhood park in the Lincoln Heights area.
- The purchase of 11.2 acres at Plaza Road Extension for $240,800 from Sandra H. Allen and Judith H.Beachley as an addition to the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve.
- Payment of condemnation settlement of $183,260.49 in the case of Mecklenburg County v. Rozumny Development. The case revolved around the current site of the Shuffletown District Park on Highway 16.
CHILD CARE RESOURCES FUNDS. The Board received and appropriated just under $2.9 million in federal and state money to fund child care subsidies in Mecklenburg County. These funds will allow children already receiving child care to continue to receive this care. These funds are intended to help the working poor maintain their jobs by subsidizing the cost of child care.
CMS BUDGET APPROPRIATION AMENDMENT. The Board approved an amendment to the current fiscal year budget appropriation document for CMS funding. This is a routine action that occurs each year due to the County having to approve its funding before the state approves its funding for schools. Essentially, this action reconciles how much County funding is provided for specific line items. It does not change the current total appropriation from the County to CMS, which is $291.4 million for operating costs.
