Airport History 1936 to 1985

 
  1936
  Municipal Airport operated by the City of Charlotte.
 
 
  Charlotte Municipal Airport, completed in 1936, it was a 
  modern and spacious airport equipped with a radio
  beam.
  1941
  Army Air Force takes control of the airport and
  establishes Morris Field Air Base.

  1950
  United Airlines begins regularly scheduled passenger
  service.

 
   
  1954
  70,000 square-foot passenger terminal opens.  Airport
  becomes Douglas Municipal Airport, in honor of former
   Charlotte Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas, Sr.
 
  1962
  Eastern Airlines begins the region's first regularly 
  scheduled jet service.
 
   
  1978
  Deregulation of the airline industry.

  Flying Tigers begins scheduled international cargo flight
  to Zurich, Switzerland.
 
  1981
  Airport renamed Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
   
  1982
  New 325,000 square-foot passenger terminal opens.
 
  1985
  American Airlines, People Express and TWA begin
  service.
