Resources & Partnerships
Managing our water supply is a complex process that involves many partners. From municipalities both inside and outside of the Catawba River Basin to conservation groups and private sector companies, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department (CMUD) collaborates across organizational boundaries.

These strategic relationships help ensure that our more than 788,000 customers have access to our most vital resource -- clean drinking water.

The organizations listed below offer resources and information related to the environment, our drinking water supply, and the Catawba River.


Catawba-Wateree Management Group
The Catawba-Wateree Water Management Group (WMG) exists to identify, fund and manage projects that help extend and enhance the capacity of the Catawba-Wateree River to meet human water needs while maintaining the ecological health of the waterway.



NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources
The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is the lead stewardship agency for the preservation and protection of North Carolina's outstanding natural resources.The organization administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health.



SC Department of Health and Environmental Control
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is the state agency charged with protecting public health, coastal resources, and the state's land, air and water quality as authorized under multiple state and federal laws.


EPA WaterSense Program
WaterSense helps people save water with a product label and tips for saving water around the house. Products carrying the WaterSense label perform well, help save money, and encourage innovation in manufacturing.


Duke Energy - Catawba River Basin
The Catawba River is a source for electricity, provides drinking water for hundreds of communities, and offers countless recreational opportunities that help make the region a wonderful place to live. 


Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation

Founded in 1997, the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation advocates for and secures protection and enhancement of the Catawba River, its lakes, tributaries and watershed so that it will always sustain the human and wildlife populations that depend on it for life.
