Solid Waste Fee Frequently Asked Questions

It's property tax time, and you may be wondering why you were assessed an annual solid waste fee on your property tax bill. All residences in the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are assessed a solid waste fee to offset the cost of waste disposal and waste reduction services and facilities. The fee breakdown is as follows:

  • Single-family Charlotte Residence: $47 paid to the City of Charlotte and $15 paid to Mecklenburg County.
  • Multi-family Charlotte Residence (per unit): $24 paid to the City of Charlotte and $15 paid to Mecklenburg County.
Tax rate and fee decisions are made by elected officials, the Charlotte City Council, and the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners.

Q.  Why was I billed for two separate solid waste fees?
A.  The City and County fees are associated with different services; therefore, two different fees are assessed.  The City of Charlotte solid waste fee is used to pay for the disposal of trash within the City of Charlotte limits. The Mecklenburg County solid waste fee is used to pay for recycling and waste reduction services and facilities throughout Mecklenburg County.

Q.  Why do I have to pay a City solid waste fee when my taxes are used to pay for the collection of trash.
A.  The cost of collection and disposal are separate costs. The City of Charlotte property taxes are used to pay for the weekly collection of garbage, recyclables, yard waste, and bulky items. The City of Charlotte solid waste fee is used to pay for the disposal of trash at the landfill. Levying a fee instead of a tax maintains a low tax rate, and gives you a clear indication of the costs associated with trash disposal and recycling services.

Q.  Why do I have to pay a Mecklenburg County solid waste fee?
A.  The Mecklenburg County solid waste fee is used to pay for recycling and waste reduction services and facilities throughout Mecklenburg County. For additional information on the Mecklenburg County solid waste fee visit www.wipeoutwaste.com.
