Volunteer and Make a Difference!
Citizens of all ages can volunteer with Engineering & Property Management (E&PM). Individuals might choose to serve on a City Council-appointed committee such as the Storm Water Advisory Council or the Charlotte Tree Commission.
Another opportunity is helping with channel and creek cleanups throughout the community. Many local scout troops assist Storm Water Services' channel team when they use a practice called "Bioengineering." This all-natural technique uses plant materials to stabilize soil and stream banks, thus reducing erosion.
Volunteers from Girl Scout Troop 378 recently helped plant small cuttings of silky dogwood (cornus amomum) and silky willow (salix sericea) in a creek bed in Southeast Charlotte. After the first season of growth, the plants will be large enough to provide shade which will reduce water temperatures and improve the health of the stream.
