The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Canine Unit (K9) currently consists of several dogs. These police service dogs assist the patrol officers and detectives in their daily work. Canine uses include building searches, area searches, tracks, perimeter security, article searches and narcotic detection.

The police canines are often used to search buildings that have been burglarized which create a hazardous situation for police officers. Our canine teams can safely and efficiently search the building with minimal hazard to the officers. They are also able to safely apprehend suspects who would have otherwise placed police officers in danger or who may have escaped.
