Animal Care & Control provides humane live traps for the capture of dogs and cats.

How the process works:
Animal Care & Control provides citizens traps for nuisance cats and dogs. The trap is loaned out for a 7 day period. The trap Officer meets with the citizen explaining how the trap works. The citizen is responsible to set and bait the trap and to contact 311 when an animal has been captured within the trap. 311 will enter a call for service for Animal Care & Control to respond to the citizen address to remove the animal from the trap. Traps are delivered throughout the city/county Tuesday through Friday within 2 hour increments between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Each delivery area is determined by zip code. Once the citizen has been contacted by phone a designated time and day will be arranged. The citizen must be at home to receive the trap.

To request a trap: call 311, ask for the trap request line and leave a message. Traps for dogs and cats loaned to citizens are set at the discretion of Animal Care & Control and are on an as available basis. A waiting period normally applies due to demand. Once a message has been left on the trap line, the coordinator will return your call within a 72 hour time period. It could take up to 2 weeks for an appointment to bring out a trap depending on demand.

Traps will not be loaned out for nuisance cats at apartment complexes. It is suggested that the management of the apartment complex purchase or rent a trap. Any dogs or cats captured in these traps will be serviced.

Animal Care & Control will not provide traps for or impound any nuisance wildlife. Citizens may set their own traps for nuisance wildlife destroying property. Wildlife permits are required through NC Wildlife Commission to trap. These traps are subject to approval by the NC Wildlife Commission. Please note that citizens must first call the NC Wildlife Commission and be issued a permit before a trap is set.

Citizens also have the option to hire a private company to trap for them.

Regardless of the choice, Animal Care & Control will not respond to remove wildlife from traps not owned by Animal Care & Control.

Please note: If a citizen calls Animal Care & Control (via 311) about wildlife in a trap that we set for the capture of domestic animals then the officer will respond to the call location and release the animal on the property where it was captured.
