Internship Opportunities
The Charlotte Intern
ational Cabinet offers several internships each academic semester and in the summer. These internships are non-salaried positions, but offer an opportunity to garner a wealth of knowledge pertaining to international relations, business and governance. CIC interns also have the chance to build professional relationships with dynamic members of Charlotte's international community.
We also offer opportunities for international students seeking experience volunteering in an American office environment. International interns must be at least 21 years old. Email us for more information.
The mission of the Charlotte International Cabinet is to promote Charlotte as an international city and to serve as a resource to foster international relationships. The Charlotte International Cabinet is comprised of business and community leaders appointed by the Mayor, City Manager or City Council to 3-year terms of service on the Cabinet. The Cabinet Office is staffed by two full time employees. We rely on interns from local colleges and universities to assist in a variety of functions.
Fall and Spring Semester
Duration: the full academic semester
Hours: minimum of 10 per week, preferably in 4+ hour blocks.
Deadline for Applications: August 10 (Fall); December 10 (Spring)
Summer Internship
Duration: 2-3 months
Hours: minimum of 20 hours per week
Deadline: April 10
Intern duties may include:
- General office administration
- Community outreach and publicity – making presentations about the CIC to various ethnic and community organizations; generating press releases and news articles
- Newsletter / desktop publishing - creating and assembling CIC brochures and literature; writing reports for publication
- E-newsletter publishing - creating a weekly e-newsletter of international events in the Charlotte area
- Website maintenance – updating the website
- Database maintenance - updating and maintaining the International Organizations and other CIC databases
- Project management and execution – work on CIC projects as directed by the Program Director
Required Skills:
- Strong organizational and research skills
- Strong communication skills and ability to multi-task
- Relevant educational background (university-level coursework), preferably in an international area of study
- Ability to problem-solve and work independently
- Interest in and commitment to international cooperation
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
- Some experience with website management (Content Management Systems and databases) is desirable, but not required
- Knowledge of a second language is a plus, but not required
As these positions are non-salaried, the Charlotte International Cabinet encourages students to enroll to receive credit for their internship from their college or university. The CIC will work with the intern's school to meet other reasonable requirements that would allow the student to earn credit for this internship.
Once a student has completed an internship, the Cabinet can also provide letters of reference for employment, graduate and post graduate applications, or scholarship applications relating to the international field.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are an important part of the Charlotte International Cabinet. The CIC welcomes volunteers for any event, including the Mayor's International Community Awards, the International Toast, and Beaujolais Festival. - Projects and events are planned and carried out by volunteer committees.
- Home Hosts
- Host families provide a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the realities of daily life in an American home. The hosting family experiences a different culture in a very personal way and acts as an ambassador for the City of Charlotte and the United States.

The public is also encouraged to attend the Charlotte International Cabinet's public meetings. On the first Thursday of every other month, the Cabinet meets at 7:30 a.m. in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, room 267. The first meeting of the year is in February. Bi-monthly meetings are open to all.
Cabinet Openings
Cabinet members are appointed to serve three-year terms by the Mayor, City Council, or City Manager. Individuals are appointed under the following categories: Business, Education, Ethnic/Cultural, Non-Profit, and an "Open" category.
